Al Balad, what a lovely place!

We went on an early morning trip to Al Balad; a lovely place, full of amazing old architecture! Wandering around the backstreets of the old town, I fell in love with the “Rawasheen,” the closed balconies. We went so early that the streets were empty and the shops were closed. As we were leaving we caught a glimpse of the shops opening and really had the sense of how crowded it can get. It was a nice experience to get to see the old part of Jeddah where people used to live many years ago and we were lucky enough to have an expert guide, Khalid who seemed to know everything there was to know about the city!

My work is deeply personal. I express my feelings, emotions and inspirations in both my artwork as well as in design. In my studio practice, I mainly work in Printmaking, and through various process, I translate my deepest thoughts through ink and different materials.

I am applying to this competition to expand abilities and artistic views and I am applying an etching piece due to the lack of local Printmaking artists. The work I am entering represents a smothered and ill China Doll, squeezed in an old jar with fungi all around its face. This work is symbolic as it expresses a state of being, where regardless of the situation a person is in (whether dead, sick, alive or depressed), people around will still talk and express feelings of jealousy, challenge, and revenge.
